Answering Back: Slade`s Dave Hill
ICBIRMINGHAM, WOW WHAT`S ON 26.11.2007
By Dave Freak

http://images.icnetwork.co.uk/upl/icbirmingham/nov2007/1/6/7C2115B8-AD89-2A77-939F0887C5D1D6C2.gif

Formed in 1966, Black Country rockers Slade scored over 20 Top 20 hits including 1971`s Coz I Luv You, Take Me Bak `Ome, Mama We`er All Crazee Now and Cum On Feel The Noize. With a global fan-base they`ve influenced acts as diverse as LA metallers Quiet Riot and Britpop legends Oasis. The original quartet, fronted by Noddy Holder, disbanded in the early `90s but `Super Yob` guitarist Dave Hill and drummer Don Powell continue to keep the Slade flag flying with bassist John Berry (ex-Mud) and vocalist Mal McNulty (ex-Sweet). Their 15th annual UK Xmas tour finds them back on home turf, concluding a year in which their early back catalogue received a thorough repackaging.

Last album you bought?
I was given Status Quo`s album [In Search Of The Fourth Chord] but I haven`t actually listened to it yet – I think it might still be in my suitcase. I went on a spate of buying a while ago and got Kaiser Chiefs [Yours Truly, Angry Mob], The Killers [Sam`s Town] and Razorlight [Razorlight]. I do listen to contemporary stuff, and my son gives me things to listen to.

Last concert you went to?
James Blunt invited me to a concert. He was very good. He Played Coz I Luv You which was very funny and I really enjoyed it. You should have seen the audience looking at me when they played it – very funny.

James Whild Lea reminds us that song writing is not a lost art.

http://www.subba-cultcha.com/scripts/getimagealbums.php?id=6188

There really is something to be said for not reading the press release before listening to an album. Who knew James Whild Lea was in 70s nightmares, Slade? I imagine a lot of people actually; but listening to the album with absolutely no preconceptions allows you to enjoy a record on its merits, and enjoy it you will.

Therapy is Jim Lea’s first solo album since the early 90s, the man who was responsible for penning Slade’s hits back in the day, old enough to be your dad, but that is not immediately obvious from listening to the record. Wonderfully crafted songs, it is an album in the true sense.

Moving effortlessly from the power ballad “Universe” which lives up to its expansive name, and “The Smile Of Elvis”, which, if a little sentimental, has the best use of oboe on a rock album since Sufijan Stevens, to the grunge apery of “Deadrock U.K.” this is a chameleon of an album. Lyrically it can be a little frustrating, “Why Is Youth Always Wasted On The Young”, is all a little bit obvious, and the “rap” on “Could God Be A Woman” is dubious, but the tunes and schmaltzy strings is catchy enough to override any doubts raised.

Kevin Money sent following comment:

I have played the tracks Far Far Away, Thanks For The Memory, and How Does It Feel, for a second time and then played the bootleg versions, I am pretty sure they are from the same concert the production sounds slightly improved except for early on in How Does It Feel which suffers from  echo which is not evident on the original bootleg so clearly someone messed that up and did not check it afterwards . . . I remember there was serious talk about the concert [from New Victoria Theatre, London, 24th April 1975] being released but I think Polydor realised that so many fans would have already heard, if not actually taped, most of the concert off the radio [BBC Radio 1] that they finally decided not to release it . . . which was a shame because even though it was much bootlegged, only 12 tracks were broadcast and hence bootlegged . . .

as you can [hopefully] see from the scans, all tracks acknowledge Barn Publishing (Slade) Ltd as the original music publishers and Whild John Music Ltd as the compilation publishers . . . the cd label is Upfront hence the catalogue no. SLADEUP001 [many promotional/freebie cd's with newspapers, magazines, even cereals, etc are released on this label]"

THANKS very much to Kevin

Dave Hill is ready for Christmas

IT’S November, the mornings are getting frostier, the shop windows are filling up with tinsel and there is a sense of anticipation in the air.

It’s nearly time to open the first window on the Advent calendar, but the Christmas season has never truly arrived until you hear one little question: Are you hanging up a stocking on your wall?

When Slade first sang the famous opening line to Merry Xmas Everybody in December 1973 – building to the annoyingly singable chorus and climaxing with Noddy Holder’s yell of “It’s Chriiiistmaaas!” – it was an immediate Yuletide hit.

.......

Noddy's confidence in the song - which will be on a Slade compilation CD free with next week's Mail on Sunday - was well placed.

Even before its release, the band were presented with a silver disc for selling 500,000 pre-ordered copies. On the first day it hit the shops, a further 350,000 copies were snapped up by fans.

Slade's record label Polydor had to use its British and French pressing plants to keep up with demand as Merry Xmas Everybody became the fastestselling single the UK had ever seen.

It eventually sold more than a million.

Noddy says he still gets immense pleasure from the fact that his song has become such an integral part of Christmas in Britain-The trademark mirrored top hat he wore on stage with the band is now stored in a bank vault ("not because I want to have it valued but because I don't want to lose it before I've had a chance to leave it to my kids") and most of his outrageous glam-rock outfits and precipitous platform shoes from his time with Slade have been donated to charity.

The nearest he gets to reliving the old days is when he hams it up for the postman at his home in Cheshire when he answers the door in a pair of tartan pyjamas.

Noddy to get a Broad Street star

By Neil Elkes, Birmingham Mail

Noddy Holder

SLADE legend Noddy Holder will float into Birmingham on a glam rock barge when he becomes the next celebrity member of the city's Walk of Stars.

And he will be screaming "It's Christmas" as he arrives in Brindleyplace for the festive spectacular on Sunday, December 9.

Popular Noddy is the third entertainer to get a Hollywood-style tribute on Broad Street, following in the footsteps of Ozzy Osbourne and Jasper Carrott.

And the 61-year-old Slade frontman today revealled he is "chuffed" at getting his own star.
